Converting Degraded Streams and Lakes Into Community Assets

Chloride Reduction Plan

Engineering modeling and calculations were provided to reduce chloride loading to a valuable lake with a 1,296 acre watershed area.  Engineering Services included Chloride Loading Calculations, GIS Mapping, and an Engineering Report. Prior to the Study, chloride levels had been increasing at a rate of 8% per year. Chloride levels were potentially toxic to juvenile fish, algae, and terrestrial plants. The Report identified sources of chloride and described recommendations to reduce chloride loading into the lake.  Leading Midwest road de-icing practices were identified based on sugar beet extraction formulations. The cost to convert to the improved road de-icing strategy for the Township were prepared.
